Rocco’s rocking up to the Manchester spicy burger scene

Hello, good evening my Bearded Beloved’s it’s me your Bearded Captain, leader of all Beards, flag bearer of all Beards on digital and digital broadcasting media. I am that Beard who tries to make people laugh and I am that Beard who tries to make people smile.

Brothers, I pray you’re well well looking after yourselves and your Beards. Kings, we need to talk about an important issue in the life of The Bearded Captain, food, chicken burger food. Yum yum for my tum indeed has such a meal been for me, for the best part of a decade.

Having stumbled across one of man’s most cherished gifts in the food industry, the chicken burger I have not looked back. Being as fat as I was at one stage was one of the reasons why I couldn’t look back. Hahaha.

In the years since my first chicken burger at Dixy’s, many spicy chicken places have been tried and tried again, such as Miami Fried Chicken. I am one of those unique souls who tries and tests, but doesn’t like to try too far and wide, until situations like this arise, a food review.

Brothers we have spoken about Shakebee, but now it’s time to talk about another pretender to the throne, Roccos. Having looked at the sign, it’s not Rocco’s Fried or Crispy or anything of the sort, it’s just Rocco’s.

Word on the social media street was this is a place that could be in contention of toppling Miami, there have been some places that have come and gone. Places like New York Crispy performed admirably, but Shakebee, not so much, well not as well as the hype suggested.

So the first thing to notice about Rocco’s is, it’s situated on a busy road, and there are some parking restrictions, but to ease your concerns there is a nearby supermarket, with a two-hour time limit, so you could maybe park there, which is what I did.

I went on a Sunday afternoon, so in theory, it wasn’t the busiest time. The first impressions, the decor was nice and it looked like a clean place to sit in and eat at. The thing was, I had a sister who was hungry at home to contend with, so for me, that wasn’t an option.

Life lesson, don’t provoke a female that’s putting yourself on a death wish, to provoke a hungry one? That’s just showing the world you don’t care about life.

In true food reviewer style, I ordered a few things off the menu. I ordered the spicy chicken burger meal, a mini fillet burger and loaded fries. I will start with the mini burger, and in my eyes, if you really want a mini burger, you go to Dixy.

The boys at Dixy are untouchable. Without fail, they always get the bread toasting correctly. Not too toasty that it tastes like toast, but not too soft I am having bread, When you put the hot dog bun in your mouth you are cutting away the steam and smoke with your mouth and getting stuck in with your teeth to tear away the chicken.

With Dixy, the chicken is succulent, tender and in big pieces. Rocco’s to their credit, got most of it right, but the hot dog bun was small. I don’t mean to say this in an insulting way, but at £1.50, Dixy’s is cheaper and tastier too. Which sounds insulting.

It was an 8/10 mini burger, but Dixy’s is a 9/9.5, which is GOAT status. As for the spicy chicken burger, sorry guys I am disappointed. The chicken batter was lovely and tasted crunchy, but not too crunchy like it’s been reheated, but the spice?

Guys, I am Asian, we have spice in everything! I was having this conversation with my sister, you need to have that runny nose burning mouth sensation when having a spicy chicken burger, your eyes get water in them, like when you watched the Lion King for the first time water in your eyes.

To finish one of those burgers at Miami’s is an achievement as you’re adamant your mouth has left you and your tongue has deserted you too.

With Rocco’s the spice was mild. So to clarify the burger was good and serviceable, but unfortunately, it wasn’t at the ultimate standard, the Miami level. One thing that Rocco’s did have in their favour was their very kind serving of chips.

When I opened the bag, to my surprise and delight too, they were filled with chips. That wasn’t an individual portion, that was a portion for a family of six! Another plus point was that they gave a big portion of chips that had red salt on them, woo hoo!

If this was a video, I would have done a Didier Drogba kind of slide celebration. Last but not least, I had Rocco’s loaded fries. This Bearded Gents, was show-stopping. Yet again a very kind helping of chips was mixed in with cheese sauce and chicken pieces cut and fried to perfection, the loaded fries came with salad too, you know for a balanced diet.

The plus points of Rocco’s is the customer service which was good and the staff were friendly too. The loaded fries were delightful as were the chips, which were drenched in red salt. Some of the bad points were that the mini burger wasn’t big enough and also the spicy chicken burger wasn’t spicy enough.

Overall a good experience an 8/10, but they do need to improve on their system the way orders go out as that added to my wait time by an extra 10 minutes or so. It’s over and out from The Bearded Captain.
