Royal Rumble

My thoughts on WWE

They say it’s fake, it’s not real, but the risks are real. World Wrestling Entertainment or WWE for short is a sport which despite its longevity still catches the public imagination.

If you ask Elias, WWE stands for! *chants in a passionate tone* “walk with Elias”. The storylines, subplots, daring moves and overall energy has made the WWE the pinnacle for any pro wrestler.

When we were kids, I don’t know anyone who would say they didn’t do any wrestling moves on their siblings, brother Malik and sister Malik’s teddy bear felt the full brunt of The Stone Cold Stunner.

I will not confirm or deny, I gave the last ride to my brother, an Attitude Adjustment, or did the five knuckle shuffle on both my niece and nephew, but the springs on a few beds were stretched let’s just say.

Let’s change the subject and talk about the pros who do this for the day job. WWE, despite the competition or rival AEW, amongst others have posed a viable threat.

The way WWE markets the brand and the fact that they have years upon years of more experience is a massive advantage.

In Shahid Khan, owner of AEW, they have a billionaire who will be able to help bankroll some top wrestling stars, Messers Ambrose and Jericho come to mind.

A fierce rival isn’t something new, in the 90’s WCW was arguably a more desirable brand than WWE, but wrestling fans remember how that ended.

Stone Cold Steve Austin, Booker T, the aforementioned Chris Jericho and Goldberg are just some of the wrestlers that comes to mind.

In my humble opinion, WWE it fluctuates, with how good the storylines are.

Sometimes the storylines are brilliant, others the storylines are a lot to be desired. .

Of course all wrestling circuits have the same issue, but WWE is the most established of all wrestling circuits out there.

I want to talk about some of the storylines at the moment and give my humble opinion on them.

The storyline between Reigns and Owens is a good one, but really creative WWE, putting the belt on him again? Why don’t you just rename his character to John Anoai Cena? Letting Rusev go, in my opinion, wasn’t the best decision either.

Love or loathe him, his Bulgarian Brute character suited him perfectly. To put him in these love story storylines, just wasted an undoubted talent, let’s hope AEW utilise his skills properly.

A storyline which I like is Seamus and Drew McIntyre, at least it’s not the usual Roman Reigns drivel.

The force-feeding of Reigns is frustrating. If you want to use The Big Dog, then the need to use to utilize him without gold around him is a must.

The Rock, Stone Cold and most recently The Fiend are still very able performers and they don’t need a title on him to be relevant, Roman’s character doesn’t seem to allow that.

I do like The Miz with The Money In The Bank briefcase. Not sounding like Michael Cole of old, I am a Miz fan.

Very good on the mic, good in a tag team even in a stable too, Michael Miznan is a WWE treasure.

I am merely just a fan, but us fans have our opinions too. Triple H, yeah my number ends in 455, and don’t forget the +44 dialling code, thank you!

Sports and COVID-19

For the past year, it’s dominated our lives and it’s dominated the news headlines too. I am not referring to Brexit, which in amongst itself has been a constant topic on everyone’s lips, I am indeed talking about the Coronavirus (Covid19). What started in December 2019 it’s believed (hence the name) has been a topic and an issue that’s still just as prevalent as it was over 12 months ago.

The virus has affected all aspects of life. From work, to shopping, to getting  a haircut and sports athletes too.  Supermarkets were rationing, which in turn lead to a Royal Rumble in its own right. In England and the rest of the UK is in yet another lockdown, where barber shops are closed and a lot of shops- recognised shops from the high street are closed. Here, I want to talk about the Coronavirus from more of the sporting side of things.

As mentioned, sports stars/athletes have been affected by Covid19 with many of these sports stars we adore and idolise suffering from Covid. So sports has been carrying on, but not with some of the worlds best and most known athletes. Football matches have been cancelled and rearranged and sports like snooker are just competing in one arena.

This year’s snooker masters tournament, just like with the other snooker tournaments that have been in a bubble environment. Cricket has been the same too, but in this article I want to talk about sports and is sports setting a bad example during covid?

Well, yes sport is but at the same time, I feel sport is unfairly targeted. Problems in the world, such as racism .. it seems like sport is solely responsible to sort the problems of society on the whole. The other side of this topic is, there’s been moments like football players clearly breaching lockdown guidelines, but at the same time the nations Prime Minister has fallen foul of the rules too.

Now if our leader isn’t following the rules, then how can we single out sports stars? There has been incidents such as India’s cricketers being seen at a Melbourne restaurant. Or the fact the Milijovic and Mitrovic been seen together.

But the one case which really took the biscuit was Manchester United’s women taking a trip to Dubai. This has caused a knock on affect in this current time for the women’s game. Sport has been seen by many as being some form of antidote to those who have mental vulnerabilities during this lockdown.

Roman Reigns Supreme In The Royal Rumble

Former Shield member Roman Reigns wins the Royal Rumble, after finishing runner up last year.

Former Shield member Roman Reigns wins the Royal Rumble, after finishing runner up last year.

Sunday 25th January may not be a date that most people will mark in their calendars or diaries – but for WWE fans 25th January was the date for the 28th Royal Rumble event. ‘The Rumble’ event promised to be a good one with the returning Daniel Bryan one of the entrants for this years event, who bullishly declared his intentions to win the event.

To the extreme disappointment of the vast majority of fans who made the journey to Philadelphia to watch the Royal Rumble, the event was won by Roman Reigns, all be it with a ‘little help from a friend’ – much to the disappointment of some of the ‘WWE Universe’. Interest faded soon after the realisation Daniel Bryan wasn’t going to win the event.

Not even the new of other entrants including Reigns’ former Shield partner Dean Ambrose, Dolph Ziggler; Ryback could brighten the very dim mood in Philadelphia. Ryback and Ziggler who only just got their jobs back after an ongoing spat with the ‘authority’,were seen as potentially ‘dark horses’ in this event.

Bray Wyatt’s achievements of staying in the event for 40 minutes – and managing to eliminate nine opponents, almost went unnoticed – such was the frustration of the WWE universe were feeling.

A few old faces were drafted to capture fans imagination such as Bubba Ray Dudley, who replicated the legendary ‘3D’ move, sadly on this occasion ‘Devon didn’t get the table’ . A further ‘blast from the past’ saw three time WCW champion Diamond Dallas page enter the fray – but it seemed quite clear that the WWE got the script wrong on this occasion, well in the WWE fans’ opinion anyway.

After seeing the eliminations of ‘popular faces’ such as Ryback, Ziggler,Daniel Bryan and a four second elimination of Titus O’Neil – the number of wrestlers were soon down to ‘four’.

Two of those ‘four’ were veterans record breaking Kane, who now has the most Royal Rumble eliminations of opponents to his name and 10 time entrant of the event Big Show. Both men had been really talking up their chances of winning the event, none more than ‘Show’. The worlds largest athlete came unannounced at the Raw reunion a couple of weeks ago to make clear his bemusement after a panel of Sean Michael’s and Rick Flair declared other wrestlers – and not the Big Show as wrestlers who could win the WWE event.

The other two men were former ‘Shield Brethren’ Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose. The duo are still very much on the same page – but not in the three man mean machine team that is the shield, due to Seth Rollins defecting to the Authority as we know.

The trio in the peak of their Shield days, were notorious for obliterating what ever was in their path- this however was a different proposition against the authority duo of Big Show and Kane. With the odds seeming to be against them, Ambrose and Reigns bravely went about their task.

The ‘task at hand’ though was a difficult one – and a bit to much, well for Ambrose at least. The lunatic fringe was eliminated, which ultimately left Roman Reigns in a handicap match – if you can put it that way. As the ‘winning line’ got closer so did the friction between Kane and Big Show. Both men though however, against all odds would be eliminated by Roman Reigns.

In the heat of battle it appeared Reigns has bettered last years performance of runner up to win the Royal Rumble – but not yet, as more drama was yet to unfold. Kane and Big Show who were both eliminated, much to their annoyance, decided to exact their revenge on Roman Reigns. Reigns was subjected to a beat down from The Big Red Machine and Big Show.

With Reigns having no one to turn to it seemed pretty bleak for the former Shield member. The Royal Rumble which might go down as one of the more disappointing Rumbles in recent times , was boosted -all be it slightly by the appearance of the Brahma Bull- the peoples champion the Rock!

The Rock’s cousin Roman Reigns was in need of help – and in the form of the 10 time WWE champion, Reigns got it. The Rock came to his cousins aid and very quickly went about attacking Big Show and Kane. A few signature moves such as the Rock Bottom, and the laying of ‘the Smack Down’ followed – but the legendary ‘peoples elbow’ on Kane capped of the Rocks cameo appearance.

With Kane and Big Show ‘out of the way’ Roman Reigns thought he could celebrate – but that wasn’t to be the case … just yet.

Back came ‘Russian brute’ Rusev into. Rusev who is currently the United States champion, wasn’t actually knocked over the top rope so hadn’t been eliminated. Reigns who was feeling battered and bruised this point after The Big Show and Kane beatdown, had to find the energy to overcome the adopted Russian fighter, who is surely the last person you want to face after a Kane and Big Show beat down.

Reigns though wasn’t to be denied, and a spear to Rusev allowed Reigns to push his man over the top rope to win the Royal Rumble, much to the delight of Roman Reigns’ fans.

This Royal Rumble event might not go down in history as the one of the best Royal Rumble events due to Daniel Bryan not winning – but Roman Reigns won’t worry about that to much. A headlining world heavyweight title fight at Wrestle-mania against ‘The Beast In Carnet’ Brock Lesnar now awaits Roman Reigns.
